  • Welcome Back, Lovely Lovely Kappa Deltas!

As we head into Spirit Week, I wondered what I could possibly say to all of you that would resonate on a personal level. Normally I would start by hoping that you all had a great summer and that it allowed everyone some well deserved rest. But we’re in college...when do we ever rest? Or want to, for that matter? Then I could go on and say that I hoped everyone had a very unrestful, fun summer and partied every night ending in “y.” But maybe you chose to maximize your working hours and earn some much needed cash in mom and dad’s office. Perhaps you spent the entire summer on the Indian Subcontinent and now speak Hindi. How was that? Maybe you got that internship you were hoping for since Winter quarter, and after all that time, realized that you will never go into the entertainment industry. Here in lies the problem.

After my first statement of “I hope you had a (fill in the blank) summer, I realized this phrase is usually regarded as a nicety or brushed off thinking, “This person knows absolutely nothing about me, or even cares.” Kappa Deltas, not only do I care, but now I realize what makes our house so unique. Over this summer, we were everywhere and did everything. We spanned the world with study abroad programs. We fueled the economy with jobs and internships (and, not to mention, shopping sprees). We made friends, boyfriends, and business connections. We laughed, cried, played, worked, shouted, swam, danced, slept, chatted, caught up, and chilled out.  And as summer draws to a lazy close, an amazing and diverse group of girls comes back to the one thing they for sure have in connection, a large white house on the corner of Hilgard and Manning and a friendship that will last a lifetime.

It is my wish that during Spirit Week and for the rest of the year, we continue to embrace each member’s unique qualities. It is because of these qualities that our house is so strong.  As a result of each girl bringing something original to the table, we are never in want of new ideas and, as a house, we have an important advantage: we will never grow stagnant. In the words of Anne Frank, “We all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different and yet the same.” We, as immeasurably different individuals, seek the same ideas that all Kappa Deltas seek: that which is honorable, beautiful, and highest.

See you soon Kappa Dees! I hope you had a (fill in the blank) summer!!

    Love & AOT
